SkillShark was built for coaches, by coaches. CEO and Founder Neil Anderson, a U18 softball coach, set out to create a better solution after growing frustrated with the time-consuming and unreliable pen-and-paper system.

More than 10 years ago, I was coaching a U18 provincial championship team and running tryouts with pen and paper. After evaluations, I would take home stacks of sheets and spend hours entering scores into spreadsheets just to build rankings.

Every ranking carried weight. Those decisions impacted athletes who had worked all year for that opportunity, and I wanted to feel confident that we were getting it right.

Instead, I was re-entering scores, double-checking formulas, trying to read messy handwriting, and worrying that something might get missed. This flawed system made an already difficult decision even harder. On top of that, athletes didn’t receive any meaningful feedback after tryouts.

I searched and searched for a solution that would make our evaluations more efficient and fair. There was nothing out there that truly fit what I needed as a coach...

Then, as an engineer & proud data nerd, I built what I called the “mother of all spreadsheets,” thinking it would solve the problem. It sure helped, but it still relied on manual admin work and left room for error.

That’s when I decided to build SkillShark Athlete Evaluations. Not just to help myself, but to help other coaches facing the same problems of time-consuming admin work after tryouts and a lack of meaningful athlete feedback.
