How to Track Athlete Progress in Youth Sports

Youth Sports

“Coach, how am I doing this season?” A question often asked by many young athletes, yet one that can’t be accurately answered without measuring an athlete's progress. Without a system in place to measure progress (or regression), coaches are often left offering feedback that's vague and misleading.

Measuring progress in youth sports isn't just about personal development of young athletes; it also sharpens your coaching: from in-game strategy adjustments to lineup decisions and substitutions.

This guide explores why tracking athlete progress matters in youth sports and breaks down practical methods for doing it, from skills checklists to player progress reports and more.

Why Is It Important to Measure Athlete Progress?

Improved Player Morale

Take a soccer coach who tracks player progress throughout the season, monitoring passing, dribbling, shooting, accuracy, and speed. After each evaluation, the coach provides athletes with verbal feedback and written reports that actually show an athlete their progress.

As athletes see their own progress, they take pride in what they've accomplished. That pride translates into excitement to show up for practice and a stronger commitment to staying consistent. And when individual athletes show up with that kind of energy, overall team morale improves.

Enhanced Athlete Performance

When you measure athlete progress in youth sports with measurable KPIs, you can provide athletes with specific and actionable feedback. Not just saying "keep working hard," but "your first-touch control has improved over the last few months; now let's work on your stamina." And when athletes know exactly what to work on, their performance noticeably improves.

Eliminate Athletes' Feelings of Self-Doubt

Athletes often doubt their abilities because they aren’t given clear feedback from their coaches. For example, an athlete who lacks confidence in their dribbling and doesn’t receive feedback may remain trapped in a cycle of self-doubt, unsure if they are actually improving.

Tracking progress breaks that cycle. Whether through verbal feedback or visual reports, this tells athletes, “The consistency, commitment, and dedication you are putting in is working.”

Tactical Decision Making

Looking to move a stronger player to defense during your next basketball game? Thinking of changing your team's attacking strategy for the next soccer tournament? Whatever the adjustment, tracking athlete progress gives you the data to back up every tactical decision.

Why Is It Important to Measure Athlete Progress?

1) Progress Reports

It's one thing for athletes to be told they're improving; they want to see tangible evidence of their growth.

This is where progress reports become invaluable, tracking and measuring each individual's skills over time. Whether you are conducting tryouts, mid-season evaluations, or clinics, use SkillShark to record scores and then let our progress reports do the rest.

How do progress reports work in SkillShark?

  • Drills are conducted as normal during any evaluation event.

  • Athletes are scored on the SkillShark app.

  • *As scores are entered into the app, they are automatically compiled into progress reports. (Provided the athlete has been evaluated more than once, so there's a baseline to measure progress against).

  • After an evaluation, coaches can see how a player has progressed (or regressed) within a specific skill.

  • Coaches can email a copy of the progress report to each athlete.

SkillShark is an exceptional tool for evaluations. The reports are impressive visually, and I appreciate being able to track player progress. SkillShark is by far the best money I've spent as an International Recruiter.

2) Skills Checklists

Skills checklists offer a simple way to measure progress in youth sports and can serve as a guideline for tracking athletes over time. Simply list the applicable skills across the columns, and write each athlete's name down the rows.

Skills checklist process:

  • Ensure your evaluators use the skills checklist at each evaluation (tryout, camp, clinic).

  • Collect all sheets after an evaluation.

  • Optional: Enter the data into an Excel spreadsheet and create reports to analyze the data.

  • Give athletes feedback on their progress, whether in person or by email.

3) Monitor Soft Skills

An athlete’s skating, dribbling, or shooting score isn’t the only form of progress that matters. Host post-practice talks to share how your team’s soft skills, such as communication, sportsmanship, and discipline, are progressing.

Note: These soft skills don’t have to be measured individually (although if you notice an athlete who could benefit from extra support, schedule a separate talk with them). Otherwise, speak to your team as a whole when discussing overall progress.

Regardless of whether the team is improving or struggling, make sure to recognize what your athletes are doing well, alongside addressing areas for improvement. Are your athletes:

  • Working together to anticipate each other’s plays?

  • Performing well under pressure?

  • Following game plans?

  • Staying committed to practice?

  • Exhibiting optimism and enthusiasm?

  • Handling challenges with resilience?

4) Conduct Athlete Self-Assessments

Progress isn’t just defined by the coach; it’s also experienced by the athlete. The strategies above have focused on your interpretation of their performance. However, it is recommended to host self-assessments throughout the season so you can gauge a better understanding of an athlete’s self-perception.

For instance, a mid-season athlete self-assessment might reveal that 50% of your athletes aren’t confident in their edgework and shooting abilities. What can you learn from this? Perhaps it's time to incorporate more skating and shooting drills, paired with more consistent verbal feedback.
