Football Agility Drills
Whether finding open space, making sharp cuts to avoid tacklers, or creating separation from defenders, players must be able to move quickly and under control. While speed is critical, agility enables athletes to react effectively and adjust their pace.
This blog covers 6 football agility drills designed to improve your players’ footwork, coordination, and reaction time. By incorporating just 1-2 of these drills into each practice, players will develop the proper movements and confidence needed for game day.
Sprint to Shuffle
Set up:
Set up two lines of pylons, with each pylon 15 yards apart.
*It is recommended for each line to have 4 pylons.
Line up all players behind the left line of pylons to start.
Execution:
The first player in line will sprint forward 5 yards and shuffle laterally 5 yards.
The player will continue executing this pattern down & across the agility course.
*Players should aim for clean and quick transitions from the sprint -> shuffle and the shuffle -> sprint.
Turn shoulders & hips towards the direction of the sprint or shuffle.
Stay on the balls of the feet for quicker movement.
Decelerate with several short & choppy steps.
Drive explosively off the outside foot to accelerate into the sprint.
Have players line up behind a cone on the right side for their next turn.
Angle Run
Set up:
Place two ropes on each end of the field to form a semi-circle position.
The 1st rope will be curved to the left, and the 2nd rope will be curved to the right.
Divide up players equally, about 2 yards away from the angled rope.
Execution:
Using short & controlled steps, the first player in each line will enter the angle, navigate around it, and accelerate out of the turn. Tips for angled turns:
Keep shoulders & hips square to maximize acceleration.
Drive the arms to maintain momentum throughout the angle.
Lean slightly into the angle while keeping feet straight underneath.
Stay as close as possible to the rope.
Once all players have had a turn, groups will switch stations and perform the angled run in the opposite direction.
T Drill
Set up:
Place three cones in a horizontal line, about 4-5 yards apart.
Place a fourth cone, about 6 yards away, directly lined up with the middle cone.
Set up two “T” stations on the field.
Divide up your players, with the first player in each line starting just in front of the sideline.
Execution:
The first player in each line will sprint to the middle cone.
As they are approaching the middle cone (about halfway), you will blow your whistle and state a direction: left or right.
Players will shift direction to reach that designated cone, squat down to tap it, and then quickly turn back to sprint to the middle cone.
The next player in line will take their turn.
Mirror Drill
Set up:
Pair up players anywhere on the field.
Each pair will stand directly across from each other to start.
Player A will assume the leader (to start), and Player B will assume the follower.
Execution:
Player A will begin by moving laterally in any direction.
Player B will mirror their partner’s movements, mirroring speed, footwork, and agility.
*For more complexity, add an agility ladder or cones in an ‘S’ or ‘Z’ shaped pattern.
On your whistle, Player A will become the follower, and Player B will assume the leader.
Quick Cut Drill
Set up:
Place 6 pylons in a zig-zag pattern.
*Each cone should have between 4-5 (diagonal) yards between them.
Set up several stations across the width of the field and divide up players evenly.
Players should start about 4 yards behind the pylons.
Execution:
The first player in each line will run towards the first cone.
As players approach the cone, they will:
Take 2-4 quick, controlled steps to decelerate and prepare for a change of direction.
Make a sharp 90-degree cut around the cone.
Receiver Separation Drill:
Setup:
Pair up players. One will assume the receiver and the other will assume the defender.
Place one pylon on the 50-yard line towards the sideline.
The receiver and defender will stand on opposite sides of one pylon, about 6-7 yards away.
You will stand about 20 yards away, directly across from the pylon.
Execution:
On your whistle, both players will sprint towards the cone.
As players sprint towards the cone, you will throw the ball sharply left or right.
At the cone, the receiver makes a sharp turn in the direction to follow & catch the ball.
The defender reacts and attempts to steal the ball.
If the receiver catches the pass, they will turn upfield and run for an additional 10–15 yards.
If the defender catches the pass, they will return the ball to the coach.
Repeat the drill, with the receiver and defender switching roles before rotating out for the next pair of players.
