Growing up, a lot of my soccer coaches had a huge influence on my life as a player on and off the field. All of those exciting moments led to me wanting to become a soccer coach and help players reach their full potential.

I’ve had a lot of soccer coaches over the years, and some of the characteristics that stand out to me include active listening, being motivational, exhibiting knowledge, and showing tons of passion and commitment.

As with any other practice, coaching is a form of art, and the best coaches all share similar characteristics. Even as a coach, there is always something new to learn. In this article, I will be going over the top characteristics that define a great sports coach, which include some of the characteristics I observed in my coaches growing up.

Lead by Example

A successful coach must have a lot of knowledge about their field. Ideally, it’s best if the coach has played the sport before (although not always a requirement). Great coaches lead by example and teach their players through actions.

Seek Knowledge

Top coaches are lifelong learners, constantly seeking new knowledge and staying ahead of trends. No matter what sport you coach, there is always something new to learn whether that is about injury prevention, skill development, or nutrition. It is vital to be receptive to new information, keep asking questions, and do your research on topics you care about.

Even during your coaching journey, you can leverage other coaches and mentors to help elevate your coaching skills.

Effectively Communicate

Great coaches are not just information holders; they are educators who share their knowledge in an easy-to-understand way. Coaches should break down complex concepts (i.e., drills) and make sure their athletes understand both the ‘how’ and the ‘why.’

Practice Strong Listening Skills

Having strong listening skills is just as important as having strong communication skills. The best coaches actively listen to their athletes and use athlete feedback to improve or alter their coaching plans.

Be Inspirational

Being a good sports coach is not just about teaching players the skills, tactics, and rules of the game. It is also about inspiring and motivating players. A coach’s speech helps give players the confidence they need to succeed.

Show Empathy

A great coach recognizes a player’s unique emotional responses and shows empathy when needed.

An environment with empathy reduces anxiety & increases performance levels. Remember, building trust and communication is just as important as developing an athlete’s skill level.

Have Discipline

Integrity is a non-negotiable trait of a great coach, helping coaches maintain high standards of conduct.

Coaches should be punctual & come prepared for each game or practice. This level of professional discipline is not only considered proper coaching etiquette, but it also sets the tone for what you can expect in return.

Be Adaptable

As with most other professions, coaching involves challenges and setbacks. Great coaches demonstrate resilience when things change, finding ways to adapt and make the best of the situation they are dealing with.

Exhibit Passion

The best coaches are deeply passionate about their field. Their commitment is visible through their dedication, work ethic, and enthusiasm they bring to every session. Their passion for both the process and the results keeps the team motivated and inspires those around them.

Provide Constructive Feedback

As a coach, being able to provide constructive feedback is the most important aspect of their role. Whether that is explaining to a player something they could have done tactically better during a play or highlighting a piece of their athleticism they need to work on.
