Alternative Training
Finding ways to train differently
Training does not always have to be “done by the book.” Training alternatively is finding different ways to train that will maximize performance for the many different types of athletes.
Don’t copy: Compare and create
Create a great training routine by comparing instead of copying. Technology makes copying easy, but you can use technology to create your training routine. If you woke up at the same time, ate the same meals, did the same workout and went to bed at the same time as the best player on your team, chances are you will still not be better than him or her. Alternative training allows you to primarily work on what will be best for your own personal growth as an athlete. Some athletes require more physical work. Some require more classroom work. Some require more film work. Some require more mental work. Every athlete is different. Don’t copy: compare and create.
Fail first. Ask questions later
Your alternative training begins with failing. Fail first to find what you have to fix in your routine. Training primarily on your strengths does not always create the complete athlete. Finding success from failing demonstrates the ability to adapt to change. Successful athletes are able to adapt to the many challenges an athlete may face or occur. Figuring out how and what to change in your alternative training is key in order to create more success.
Small things matter most
Pay attention to detail. Repeat. You are your best coach. No one is with you more in a day than YOU! Pay attention to your training, to your body, your teammates, your coaches, your competition and most of all, YOU!
Don’t be afraid to be different. Be the alternative choice.
