5 Tips For Team Social Media Accounts

A delightful bonus of being a sport fan in the social media age is the ability to connect with teams and athletes via their social media accounts. The content is unlimited: wit, hobbies, families, talents, mockery, vacations and so much more is shared by athletes and teams. Fans are able to follow along with more than the actual games…and even get to look at their favourite athletes dogs every once in awhile!

So now that we know Tom Brady has a cute pup, is there a way that your minor league team can tap into this connectivity movement? Absolutely! Here are our best tips on generating a team page that will keep parents, players and families engaged.  

1. Create accounts- and find someone to run them.

Most parents will have their own personal pages and will know the ins and outs about posting content. Try to find someone who is (almost) always in attendance and is passionate about helping the team. Is Social Susie interested in the role? Woohoo! Think about making accounts on multiple mediums. Have someone a little less experienced interested? No problem. Just pick one medium and make sure that the majority of the team has an account to follow along.

 2. Outline “Do’s and Don’ts” to the parents

Inform parents that this page will not be used to discuss player availability, team concerns, or any other back and forth conversations that can be done through another portal (psst- go see our friends at TeamSnap for this!). Instead, let them know that this will be used for connectivity and shared experiences. Explain that similar to any other Facebook page, comments will be monitored and deleted if necessary.

3. Content, Content, Content!

As soon as evaluations wrap up and teams are formed, start posting content! Post scores throughout the game, photos after a big win, community events that the team took in, highlights from Tuesday nights practice, or a birthday wish to a player on their big day. This will allow parents and followers to feel part of something and increase engagement. Are you looking to drive thousands of followers to your social media pages? No. Are you looking to drum up some excitement, have an easy place for grandma two states over to tune in to, or keep a mom who is stuck in the office late informed? Absolutely. Feeling super inspired? Have a post-game interview with the kid who just caught his first pop fly, or post a contest to win something donated by a local business.  The possibilities are endless in content and the benefits for morale and fun are endless just the same.

4. Thank your sponsors

Do you have a local pharmacy that continues to show you support? Or maybe a tire shop that sponsored your new jerseys this year? Let them know that you will be sharing their information on your Facebook page.  It is often goodwill that supports youth sport, and social media is the perfect place to give these companies or individuals some public thanks.

5. Start, Stay and Finish Strong

It is easy to come out red hot at the beginning of the season, before sliding into routine and struggling to drum up content. By developing a plan and sticking to it, it will be easier to avoid the “social funk” midway through the season. Ask parents to share content with you to help keep it fresh and exciting all year long. Make sure that your team stays active with the account, and accomplishes the original purpose of connectivity of information (and fun!!).
